NATURAL MATERIALS
NATURAL MATERIALS

BEYOND CERTIFIED ORGANIC MATERIALS

The materials we use are just as important as the materials we don't use. No polyurethane foams, no off-gassing adhesives to bind the layers or toxic flame retardants. Instead, our mattresses boast premium, renewable materials — GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool — delivering more luxury, performance, and durability than any synthetic material. This is why Avocado's Green Mattress is the highest rated mattress in America, across every category and price range.

When it comes to our materials, we raise the bar. We raise our own sheep responsibly to organic standards. We clean and process our wool naturally. We own our rubber tree farms and make our own latex foam cores. We handcraft each mattress in Los Angeles, in a GOTS certified factory that we own and has been in continuous operation since 1987, with the finest domestic and international materials. And we obsessively test and redundantly certify everything in our brand name for trust and transparency — from our farms all the way to the finished mattresses — to be organic, safe, responsible, renewable.

This radically honest and vertically-integrated approach enables Avocado to deliver the best natural latex mattresses and bedding at remarkably affordable pricing.

ORGANIC LATEX

ORGANIC LATEX IS SOFT, COOL & AMAZINGLY DURABLE

Latex is undeniably the most comfortable and supportive material for use in a mattress. No synthetic material — like polyurethane foam, memory foam, synthetic latex, or colorful polymer grid — comes close to the comfort, breathability, resilience, and durability of pure and natural latex.

Yet not all latex is the same. There are no ecological or social responsibility standards for “natural” or synthetic latex. So we don't use them. We only use GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex. And we make it ourselves. We co-own more than 4,000 hectares of organic "rubber tree" farms in southern India, which are FSC® certified (C156318) for responsible forest management. And we even make our own GOLS-certified organic latex foam cores. These are eco-INSTITUT® certified for purity and lab-tested annually for STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification (19.0.79546, Hohenstein HTTI), to further ensure no harmful chemicals are present.

ORGANIC WOOL

GOTS Organic Certified Wool

ORGANIC WOOL IS BETTER THAN SYNTHETIC FIBERS

For thousands of years, people have used wool in bedding to stay comfortable and cool because of its unique thermoregulating properties — it keeps you warm when it's cold and and cool when it's hot. That’s because the hollow fiber structure of wool allows for large volumes of air, giving natural insulation, elasticity, and resilience. Wool can absorb significant amounts of water (up to 30% of its weight) without ever feeling wet. This delivers natural temperature-regulating properties that complement our organic latex foam. Better still, it’s naturally flame resistant. It tends to char and self-extinguish, rather than burn. So we use GOTS-certified organic wool in our (non-vegan) mattresses to completely eliminate the need for flame retarding chemicals and synthetic fire barriers, while still easily meeting federal safety standards for flammability. Our organic wool has also received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification (15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI) to ensure no hidden flame retardants or harmful chemicals are present. There is simply no more sustainable and renewable fiber than organic wool. Sheep just need sunshine and green grass to thrive. Furthermore, we are the only mattress-maker in the world to use wool certified to the Responsible Wool Standard, which ensures our wool comes from farms that have a progressive approach to managing their land, practice holistic well-being for the sheep, and respect the Five Freedoms of animal welfare.

Where do we source our wool? From our own organic certified, responsibly managed flocks — with more than 200,000 sheep. These tan, brown, and black Gaddi sheep are a domesticated breed related to Merino that thrive in the far north of India, with exceptionally fine and dense fleece. They graze across more than 40,000 hectares of certified organic pastures along the steep steps of the Himalayas at altitudes of 8,000 to 14,000 feet above sea level. We directly employ more than 100 farmers, 400 herders, and support more than 50 villages with fair, living wages.

ORGANIC COTTON

GOTS Organic Certified Cotton
GOTS Organic Certified Cotton

CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON IS SOFT, LUXURIOUS, COOL, AND STRONG

Conventional cotton is chemically grown and one of the world's most polluted crops. The impact on human health and the environment is irresponsible and unsustainable. So as a rule, we don't use conventional cotton. (Nor do we use polyester or synthetic stretch-knit blends in our mattress and pillow covers.) Instead, we only use premium GOTS-certified organic cotton from India — an incredibly soft yet highly durable natural fiber. We use USDA certified organic cotton fiber, farmed using National Organic Program (NOP) standards. It has received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® certification (19.HIN.68466, Hohenstein HTTI). It provides a luxurious finish, unparalleled comfort, and ample air circulation.

Better still, organic cotton is grown without harmful chemicals, leaving the soil, air, and water free from harmful contaminates. Organic cotton also helps mitigate the climate crisis, as it produces around 46% less carbon dioxide compared to conventional cotton. It also uses up to 90% less water to grow since our organic cotton growers generally rely on rainwater for irrigation.

NATURAL ALPACA, ONCE RESERVED FOR INCA ROYALTY

Living in the harsh, wind-swept Andes at elevations above 12,000 feet, alpaca developed a highly sophisticated wool. It has the delicate texture of cashmere, the luster of silk, and the functionality of sheep’s wool. It is lightweight, temperature- and moisture-regulating, flame-resistant, and antimicrobial. It isn’t itchy and doesn’t contain oil or lanolin. It’s also hypoallergenic. Once reserved for Incan royalty, alpaca wool is now one of the most sought-after fibers in the world.
