GOTS & GOLS CERTIFIED
OUR ORGANIC CERTIFIED FACTORY
MADE TO HIGHER ORGANIC STANDARDS
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the worldwide leading textile processing standard for organic fibers, including ecological and social criteria, backed up by independent certification of the entire textile supply chain. The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) is a materials and processing standard for organic latex and finished latex foam. These standards define worldwide recognized requirements that ensure organic status of textiles and latex, from harvesting the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labeling, in order to provide a credible assurance to consumers. GOTS and GOLS are standards endorsed by the USDA’s National Organic Program.
Of the hundreds of mattress brands in the U.S., only five currently operate GOTS and GOLS organic certified production facilities. Our Avocado factory in Los Angeles is one of these select few (CU863637), meeting the rigorous standards as verified by Control Union® to manufacture certified organic certified products.
Of course, our GOTS certified products are listed in our brand name in the GOTS Public Database. We also own our own GOTS/GOLS organic certified latex farm and processing facility in India.
OUR LOS ANGELES FACTORY
BECAUSE WE ALL LIVE DOWNSTREAM
Manufacturing results in the often inadequately treated discharge of toxic chemicals into the air and water, as well as hazardous workplace situations. We all “live downstream” and share the same water and air, and production workers deserve our respect and care. GOTS prohibits the use of the kinds of chemicals commonly used in textile processing that can cause cancer, birth defects, and other serious illnesses. Chemicals, like persistent hormone-disrupting substances, also destroy ecosystems and biodiversity on an international scale. GOTS requires that all dyes and auxiliaries are assessed to its strict criteria and approved prior to usage.
SUSTAINABLE AND RESPONSIBLE
While an important step in the right direction, the use of organic materials alone is not enough. When using organically produced materials, farm workers and the environment are protected. When manufactured without using hazardous chemicals, factory workers and the environment are protected. When there are no harmful residues in the end product, consumers are protected.
GLOBAL ORGANIC LATEX STANDARD (GOLS)
Our 175,000-square-foot facility in Los Angeles is also certified by Control Union® to manufacture materials under the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). To achieve GOLS certification, a product must contain more than 95% of certified organic raw material of the total weight. The GOLS standard features permissible limits for harmful substances, emission test requirements, and polymer and filler percentages. By using transaction certificates at every step in the supply chain, we ensure traceability from the plantation to the final product.
HIGHER STANDARDS
GOTS and GOLS are recognized as the world's leading processing standard for textiles made from organic fibers and organic latex. The standards cover the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of all textiles and latex foams made from certified organic natural fibers.
NATURAL IS BETTER
BEYOND ORGANIC
ENVIRONMENTAL CRITERIA
Everything that comes through our doors must meet stringent requirements for toxicity and biodegradability. No toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, functional nano particles, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), or their enzymes may be used. No chlorine bleaching, no Azo dyes that release carcinogenic amine compounds, and no phthalates or PVCs.
ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES
As a GOTS and GOLS organic certified factory, we have an environmental policy including target goals and procedures to minimize waste and discharge. Raw materials, intermediates, final textile and foam products, as well as accessories, meet stringent limits regarding unwanted residues.
SOCIAL CRITERIA
GOTS and GOLS organic certifications outline social criteria based on the key norms of the International Labor Organization (ILO), which must be verified. Simply put, it means we provide fair pay and safe working conditions, while saying "no" to discrimination and child labor. In fact, our valued production teams are paid living wages and provided progressive and comprehensive benefits, including family healthcare and three weeks of paid vacation. Many of our skilled production team members have worked with us for more than 30 years!
QUALITY ASSURANCE
Our GOTS and GOLS organic certifications extend to our entire supply chain and use a dual system to check compliance with all relevant criteria consisting of on-site auditing and stringent residue testing.
WHOLE SYSTEM APPROACH
We believe organic is a whole system approach to farming and food production. It must recognize the close interrelationships between all parts of the production system from the soil to you, the buyer. Agricultural principles are used to produce food of high quality in sufficient quantity and to work within natural systems and cycles throughout all levels from the soil to plants and animals. That's why the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recognizes the Global Organic Textile Standard.
BEYOND ORGANIC
The Avocado brand is built on two core pillars — sustainability and social responsibility — that actually go well beyond organic practices. When you purchase our products, you're voting (with your wallet) to supportenvironmentally conscious, ethical, and sustainable business practices — to help safeguard your health and protect our planet.
OUR LARGER VISION
GOTS and GOLS organic certifications are important and significant. But our larger vision is as aspirational as it is urgent and action-oriented: to foster socially conscious lifestyles that share a deep responsibility for our planet. This is just the beginning. We will continue to strive for more.
